100 Days

100 Days

My very first ultramarathon is exactly 100 days away from today on May 1st, 2010.  It’s called the Strolling Jim and takes place in a rural part of Tennessee in a town called Wartrace.  I’m feeling good about everything and just wanted to give an update about my training progress.  Be sure to let me know if you plan on running the Country Music Marathon at the end of April!

Please don’t complain about the cost of marathons because Competitor charges $100 for CMM. There are plenty of much better marathons with 100-500 people for half that. Competitor’s races are parties. That’s fine and I am sure they are a lot of fun but not the norm.

You are totally right. I think I was rash with that statement. I’ve only run two marathons, Chicago and Boston, and both were over $100… so my point of reference is pretty narrow. I enjoy smaller, less busy, races so I look forward to doing more as training runs as I attempt more ultras. Do you have a good resource for where you find your (affordable) marathons?

    Marc:
One of the best resources for finding marathons is the calendar at the Marathon Maniacs site. We participate in a variety of races, from the big Competitor R&R to ultra low key free ones.

I am in the middle of trying to run 13 marathons in 12 weeks. I’ve got 11 to go and this is my only weekend off. My races run from free (two races in the Boone Marathon Series) to about $90 (ING Miami) Most are about $50.

The key is to avoid ‘destination marathons’ with a required packet pick up the day before and in a city with expensive hotels. If you can drive and stay someplace cheap for one night, it is extremely affordable. Usually this will mean a rural marathon with 100-500 people. Free marathons typically have 5-20.
